Connecting & configuring Postscript
Sync checkout SMS consents to Postscript automatically using an API integration.
Overview
This guide explains how to connect your Postscript account to Dataships. Once connected, Dataships automatically syncs consented SMS subscribers from your checkout into Postscript, so your subscriber list stays current without manual exports or imports. Opt-ins and opt-outs made inside Postscript are picked up by Dataships automatically, so consent stays in sync on both sides.
Postscript does not use a one-click sign-in. Instead, you create a security key pair in Postscript and paste the Private API Key into the Dataships Control Panel. Postscript has no lists, so there are no lists to create or select.
Setup has three steps:
- Create a security key pair in Postscript
- Save your Private API Key in Dataships
- Choose your Opt-In keyword
Finding the Integration
In the Dataships Control Panel, go to Integrations › Marketing Platforms in the left panel. Locate the Postscript card and click Install to begin setup.
If Postscript is already installed, click Configure and choose Authentication from the sidebar to update your key.

Step 1: Create a Security Key Pair in Postscript
Create a key pair in your Postscript account so Dataships can sync subscribers on your behalf. Postscript shows a public key and a private key on the same screen. Only the private key works with Dataships.
- Sign in to Postscript and go to Account › API
- Click Create Security Key Pair if you do not already have one
- Click Show next to the Private key
- Copy the Private key
Important: Copy the Private key, not the Public key. Dataships cannot connect to your Postscript account with the Public key.
Step 2: Save Your Private API Key in Dataships
Return to the Dataships Control Panel.
- Go to Integrations › Marketing Platforms › Postscript › Install
- Paste the Private key into the Private API Key field
- Click Save
Dataships stores your key encrypted and treats it like a password. When you save, Dataships checks the key with Postscript and connects your account.
Step 3: Choose Your Opt-In Keyword
Postscript adds new subscribers through a keyword. Dataships sends every opt-in through the keyword you choose, so create one in Postscript for Dataships and select it in the Control Panel. For double opt-in, the keyword's reply is the confirmation text your new subscribers receive.
- In the Dataships Control Panel, go to Integrations › Postscript › Configure › Keyword
- Click Open Postscript Keywords to open Keywords in Postscript
- Click Create Keyword if you do not already have one for Dataships, choose the Opt In type and write the reply your subscribers will receive
- Return to the Dataships Control Panel and click Refresh to load your keywords
- Select your keyword from the Opt-in Keyword dropdown
- Click Save
Under SMS configuration, SMS Consent Sync shows Opt-in keyword selected once your keyword is saved. Click Refresh if the status has not updated.

Changing Your Opt-In Keyword
To send opt-ins through a different keyword:
- Go to Integrations › Postscript › Configure › Keyword
- Click Refresh to load your latest keywords from Postscript
- Select a keyword from the Opt-in Keyword dropdown
- Click Save
Important: Keep the selected keyword in Postscript. If it is deleted, Dataships stops syncing new subscribers until you select another keyword.
How Consent Is Synced
- Single opt-in: shoppers are subscribed in Postscript straight away and do not receive a confirmation text.
- Double opt-in: Postscript texts the shopper your keyword's reply. They become a subscriber once they respond, and Dataships updates their consent record.
- Opt-outs at checkout: when a shopper opts out through Dataships, they are unsubscribed in Postscript.
- Opt-outs in Postscript: when a shopper unsubscribes inside Postscript, for example by replying STOP, Dataships picks it up automatically and updates their consent record. There is nothing to set up in Postscript for this.
- Subscriber properties: Dataships adds its consent properties to each subscriber in Postscript, so you can use them in your segments.
Important: Postscript only sends SMS. Dataships syncs SMS consent to Postscript. Email consent is synced to your email platform.
Viewing Your Subscribers in Postscript
To check that subscribers are arriving:
- Sign in to Postscript
- Open your subscribers and search for a shopper's phone number
New subscribers appear as they consent at checkout, so it is normal to see no new subscribers immediately after setup. Double opt-in shoppers only appear once they reply to the confirmation text.
Uninstalling the Integration
To remove Postscript, go to Integrations › Marketing Platforms, click the trash icon on the Postscript card, and confirm in the modal.
Uninstalling stops Dataships from syncing any new subscribers to Postscript. It does not remove or alter existing subscribers in your Postscript account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need an API key instead of just clicking connect?
Postscript does not offer a one-click authorisation screen. Creating a security key pair in Postscript and pasting the Private key into Dataships achieves the same result.
Where do I find my Private API Key?
In Postscript, go to Account › API and click Show next to the Private key.
Why do I need to choose a keyword?
Postscript adds new subscribers through a keyword, and keywords can only be created in Postscript. Choosing one tells Dataships which keyword to use, and its reply is the confirmation text your double opt-in subscribers receive.
Why is a double opt-in shopper not showing in Postscript?
Postscript only adds a double opt-in shopper once they reply to the confirmation text. Until then, they do not appear in your subscribers.
Do I need to set anything up in Postscript for opt-outs?
No. Dataships picks up unsubscribes made in Postscript automatically.
Does Dataships sync email or WhatsApp consent to Postscript?
No. Postscript only sends SMS, so Dataships syncs SMS consent to Postscript.
What happens to my subscribers if I uninstall?
Uninstalling only stops future syncing. Dataships will not remove or change any subscribers already in your Postscript account.
Can I update my key later?
Yes. Go to Integrations › Marketing Platforms › Postscript › Configure › Authentication, paste the new Private key, and click Save.
If you see an authentication error after saving your key, check that you copied the Private key rather than the Public key, and that it was copied in full.
